Sponsor a Beekeeper

Education and equipment can be life changing!

When you sponsor a beekeeper, a villager will participate in a 2-week beekeeping course, plus gain all the necessary tools to begin beekeeping.

Who gets sponsored? Villagers are selected based on their income level (with preference given to low income residents) and interest in beekeeping. We do our best to select from all different parts of Ololosokwan Village, reaching families that are most in need. Recently we have expanded to out outreach into other villages, such as Kipamba Village with the Hadzabe tribe.

Whats the training like? Beneficiaries are trained by the team of Maasai Honey expert beekeepers. Four beekeepers are graduates of the Beekeeping Training Institute in Tabora, Tanzania. The ten day course consists of both theoretical and practical lessons. Trainees get to step into the bee cages of Maasai Honey, getting hands-on beekeeping experience and observing a range of hive conditions. Post training, staff members are available to provide guidance and advice on the beekeeping process.

What are the long term benefits of beekeeping? Once beekeepers begin harvesting honeycomb, this food can be eaten, traded, or sold in the local market. Beekeepers can also sell their unpressed honeycomb to Maasai Honey, earning income for every kilo of honey produced. In this way, beekeeping and honey production can generate a sustainable income source for these villagers! As an additional benefit, beekeeping activities also support the native, indigenous bees of the region.

When you sponsor a beekeeper, the beneficiary will receive:

  • A comprehensive, two-week beekeeping training

  • A Tanzanian top-bar beehive

  • A full protective suit including boots, gloves, and a beekeeping veil.

  • A bee smoker

  • A hive tool

  • A bee brush

  • A white bucket
